So my next personality psych exam is on Thursday. This exam includes the defense mechanisms each and everyone of us possesses in our unconsciousness. I thought it would be interesting to share with you guys and I swear this isn't gonna be a boring post even though it is from my textbook. Let's begin by defining Defense Mechanisms. According to Sigmund Freud, Defense Mechanisms is the techniques the ego uses to keep certain thoughts and impulses hidden in order to avoid anxiety. One example is REPRESSION. If a certain memory hurts too much, I have the tendency to keeps that memory out of my consciousness so it is successfully locked away in my unconscious so I won't have to be reminded of the painful past. This is one of the Defense Mechanisms I'm talking about.

So here goes the second Defense Mechanism, which is PROJECTION. Projection protects us against unwanted impulses by causing a behavior that, at first glance, appears to be opposite. For example(this is stated on my textbook), "Self-doubt could lead to projection. People who doubt their intelligence often deal with anxiety about their own inadequacy by claiming to be surrounded by morons. It seems to make them feel better, and for the short term, pointing out how other people are stupid makes them seem smarter than they would otherwise appear." Honestly, who were you being reminded of after reading the above paragraph? This ex-classmate of mine certainly came into my mind after reading that part on my textbook and I find it amusing!
